Did you hear the one about how Archbishop Burke was "promoted out" of the US?

That’s what a great many of his Stateside critics would have you believe. But given the Archbishop’s steady rise in prominence, influence, and his accumulation of real power within the Roman curia, I’d say his critics are really just whistling past the cemetery. They know that he represents and champions the very things that a great many of them are implacably opposed to (e.g., the Usus Antiquior Missae, a clear, unambiguous, orthodox presentation of Catholic doctrine, confronting obstinately dissenting “Catholic” politicians and others who promote abortion, Catholic moral teaching on issues on sexual issues, etc.).

Thus, the higher Archbishop Burke rises and the more powerful he becomes, Deo volente, the more effervescently will evaporate their hopes and dreams and fantasies of such things as women in the priesthood, the Church’s abandonment of its teaching on the immorality of contraception and homosexual acts, etc.

Catholic commentator Diane Korzeniewski provides the salient facts about His Grace’s ascendancy plus a thought-provoking question about just how high he might rise.

To the east side.
To a deluxe apartment in the sky.
Movin on up,
To the east side.
We finally got a piece of the pie.

Fish don’t fry in the kitchen;
Beans don’t burn on the grill.
Took a whole lotta tryin’,
Just to get up that hill.
Now we’re up in the big leagues,
Gettin’ our turn at bat.
As long as we live, it’s you and me baby,
There ain’t nothin wrong with that.

Well, we’re movin on up,
To the east side.
To a deluxe apartment in the sky.
Movin on up,
To the east side.
We finally got a piece of the pie.

Archbishop Raymond Burke is humble, and a very holy man.

To speak of his "rise" in the Church as if the Church is like a business corporation is reflective of a misunderstanding of what the Church is, and that is a divine institution instituted by Christ.

Archbishop Burke will one day be the first Pope from America.

This is an interesting take on the Archbishops rise. Most of my friends and I were very disapointed with his promotion to the Vatican. We are all very traditional and I took his promotion as a way of minimizing his influence in the Church. He was doing all these great things here at home. Now we rarely hear from him. It's like the the folks in charge were like "this guys makin us look bad let's put him in a quite corner and make him push paperwork around" Seems like he could have been more of an asset in an Archdiocese

    Mr. Madrid,

A very timely article, particularly considering the pretensions of a new "priests" group in Ireland. Among their stated goals are, in summary, the "ordination" of women to the priesthood, a restructuring of the divinely willed hierarchy of the Church, and the "pastoralizing" of the Church's teachings on sexuality. God save us from more priests finding their "voice" in this way!

  5. Diane Korzeniewski, OCDS says:

Matthew 13:57 should be kept in mind. Many in the US, including fans of Archbishop Burke may not be able to see him elected as Pope, but his stature among foreign prelates? What were the odds against Ratzinger?. And the reaction when he was elected?

  6. Kevin O'Brien says:

I wrote an article on this which will be published in the next issue of The St. Austin Review. Ahttp://www.staustinreview.com/ rchbishop Burke's critics are trying to pull a kind of revisionist history on an event that's about as historical as yesterday's lunch. But the lie, even the Big Lie, never sticks. Archbishop Burke is a future saint, and the truth will win out.

    And soon cardinal.

  9. Steve says:

How can the Church offer a credible witness to the world when most "Catholic" politicians have no right to call themselves Catholic? How can the Church offer a credible witness to the world with 20,000 Protestant denominations calling themselves "Christians?" Aaaand now I have an ulcer.

Also, Mr. Madrid, if you would look at my blog (and comment!), I would be honored.
