Israeli President Netanyahu urges U.S. return to 1845 borders

This is clever. However, given Dear Leader’s chronic diplomatic cluelessness, it’s quite possible he wouldn’t realize that this is satire. In any case, I will go on record here and declare that I do not support any effort to retrench America’s southern border back to where it was in 1845.
Aboard Air Force Aleph (Reuters) – Speaking to reporters accompanying Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on his long flight to the United States tonight, Netanyahu spoke of the injustice and hardship Mexicans have endured since American forces annexed Texas in 1845. “Tens of thousands of ordinary Mexicans were driven out of their homes – the only homes they had known for centuries – and forced to live in poverty and squalor south of the border imposed by American aggression,” Netanyahu said. “The Israeli and Mexican people agree on this: This festering wound will never heal until America takes bold steps to return to the internationally accepted lines of 1845. Clearly the settlement activity that’s taken place in occupied Mexico since then is illegal. When I meet the President tomorrow I will tell him to halt all building activity in Texas immediately. Two lands for two peoples, yes, but not on land taken by force from Mexico,” the Prime Minister said.
Asked if his hard-line stance could hurt the U.S.-Israel relationship, Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s commitment to America’s security and the unshakeable friendship shared by the two countries, then added, “But who was it who said, part of friendship is being able to tell your friend the truth.”

Patrick, I did get your sense of humor, and I too believe this President is in way over his head, but he knows how to campaign, so he’s doing what he knows how to do best — making more empty promises on the campaign trail.
Sorry folks, the man does not know if he’s Christian, Jewish, Islamic or what-have-you. Without Christ centering his soul, we will only keep seeing more of the same confusion.
Gee whiz, Patrick. Doesn’t anyone get this great post? Our “grand and glorious” President should be supporting Israel. Obama alienates our friends and “befriends” our enemies; however, he’s not really making friends with anyone.
He spent the first half of his tenure apologizing for us being a world leader and now he’s trying to tell everyone else what to do.
I don’t like to wish away time but 2012 can’t come soon enough.

You can’t wish time away, it is a LONG campaign to the 2012 elections. The campaigning has already started and we are thanking God every day that we no longer have a TV in the house !
I suppose you left out that the pre-1967 borders solution was also foreign policy of George W. Bush. I know you wouldn’t want to be dishonest just to sleight our President. I suppose you also left out in your attempt to snark that Israel doesn’t contribute billions of dollars to the US Treasury, as the US does to Israel’s treasury.

Your little slight of hand doesn’t make this any more humorous. Your intent was to make light of American (administrative) policy. You can’t have it both ways. I do think everyone gets the sarcasm (humor?) I doubt anyone forgets about the billions of dollars that have been given to Israel. How’s that saying go…”don’t bite the hand that feeds you”!

Deny it if you wish, but the fact is, Dear Leader is in way over his head. As evidenced by his continual blunders, gaffes, and the chronic incompetence he brings to practically everything he attempts to “fix,” this most recent diplomatic debacle with Netanyahu shows that he does not understand how to direct foreign policy coherently, much less skillfully.
I don’t really follow Obama’s admin to tell how much of a blunder his work is. However, I do know that satirizing our government is an American tradition. Even our first vice-president made jokes about his own job being useless.
Understand buut disagree with the Israeliie President’s satire. For starters, i would wager hardly anyone remember’s what life in 1845 texas was like. It is, however well within living memory what per 1968 Palestine was like. More over, there is creedance that Israel knowingly sought their new borders as they strategically (by accident of course!!) attacked American interests to gain it (USS Liberty). More over, Texans not americans fought and booted Mexicans from Texas. Fine line? I think not, perhaps the Israelie President is unfamiliar with why Texas is callled the “lone star state”. Incase he reads your blog, its because Texas fought for and won independence as thier own nation, and later requested to be made a part of the USA. So nice try, but it doesn’t quite fit.
Why, yes, Carlo! You raise an excellent point. Since there are so few people still alive anymore who are at least 180 years old (i.e., about 14 years old when the borders changed back then), you’re correct that “hardly anyone” can remember that stuff. Great catch.
Your Texas history lesson was rather muddled, though. Nice try.
Muddled? Not too sure about that though sure I exclude a lot for instance the role the American settlers desire to continue slave labor played in this war. Ultimatly however, the war was fought by Texan Americans, who did in fact create their own nation, which later was absorbed into the union. This is unlike the ’67 war, which was fought by Israel directly, for the purpose of gaining the disputed territories. So the point goes deeper than no one can remember it, the point is the comparison isn’t exactly apples to apples.
With respect to Israels objections, perhaps the nation can’t be returned exactly to the ’67 borders. However I don’t think there is any denying that Israel must face and do a lot of what they don’t want to do. i.e. give the palistinians control of not just their own internal affirs, but thier destiny with a viable nation.
