I don't know what's more sad: the truth of the reality of mega-churches or the fact that there truly are so many unchurched people in our midst. Regardless of whether or not the mega-church or the Catholic is "the" way to "do" church, there is a sad number of people who are not drawn to church, God or anything in between.

My take on it is not because this church over here is offering up Starbucks while this church over there has too much liturgy. My take is because people aren't talking enough about Jesus in their everyday lives. Period. Get the spiritual conversations going first. Then you might actually get people interested in the finer details of how much liturgy / coffee / rock music / pew seats / theater seats / etc. to include in a service. What's more important – the way it's done or that people who are doing church know Jesus in the first place??

The even more scarey reality is that I have had to minister in Catholic congregations who are convinced we need to compete with these independant, fundamentalist, evengelical churches. I worked in a Catholic High School where the campus ministry office had been comandeered by a group of non-catholic fundamentalist teens who wanted to rewrite the mass. I know well meaning Lutheran and Presbyterian pastors who have abandoned any hint of their repective liturgy for the purpose of attracting the "unchurched". As far as the Starbucks coffee shop mentality is concerned, Catholics are infamous for donuts and coffee after each mass on "Hospitility Sunday". Our coffee is just never as tasty.

I will admit I'm torn between this being either hilarious or down right mean. In any case, I think I have to say it is sadly true, meaning maybe we should be horrified by this reality?
