of Christ

By Thomas a’ Kempis

After the Bible, The Imitation of Christ is the all-time favorite book of Catholics throughout the world. And of the English editions, none can equal this inspiring translation of Bishop Richard Challoner.

This book speaks to the soul of every true Christian, reminding him of the fleeting nature of earthly joy as opposed to the eternity of happiness with God.

The guide of saints since it first appeared in 1418 it was the sole spiritual reading of St. Therese of Lisieux, who loved it and knew it by heart. Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange asserted that the true mysticism of which it speaks is accessible to all, if they are willing to follow the way of humility, the cross, continual prayer, and docility to the Holy Ghost.

a good carmelite nun suggested that i read it. i searched copies and finally got it with a “spiriual commentary and readers guide by Dennis Billy C.Ss.R.”
he has helpful intro/explanation to each chapter and a few examine questions after the chapter…but i still have found Kempis’s thought so simple to be opaque. the translation is modern and a bit strained.

good news tho, if your still there, i found free audio book versions, i think this is best
listen to player or download mp3 below the player. nice old english version

    another version, more modern here

i’m fnding it helpful for a poor reader like myself, God Bless

  2. Hi,Yeah I have read this and own two copies of the book one in english and one in spanish.Being a lay catholic It took me about three years to read the whole book. I found it very difficult and challenging to read at first but it was very rewarding each time I took a break. I liked it so much that I recommended it to friends but they found it too hard I finally understood that maybe it’s not for everyone but for those that like challenges. It has many quotes from the Bible and it’s certainly a worth much more than $10. Has any body else read it besides me??? Thanks.
