Hey all,

Listen, I am very curious about the links to the modern liturgy back to the early Church. What are the best sources to read about such things. I believe there is some info in the Didache. Any others?

Denis Crouan's The History and Future of the Roman Liturgy is a good historical overview, Fr. Peter Stravinska's The Catholic Church and the Bible shows the Biblical roots in the Liturgy, and Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger's The Spirit of the Liturgy goes in-depth into what the liturgy is and why it's so important that it not be tampered with by anyone. I found all three very helpful.

Here's a brief overview of the seven rites of the Catholic Church:

And an article on the liturgy from the old Catholic Encyclopedia:

The liturgy also bears some resemblance to a Jewish sabbat' service, not surprising considering that the Apostles had once been Jews.

Yours in Christ,

Patti
