Can you guess what’s in your home that costs $65,000 a gallon?

I bet you can’t. But here’s a hint:  It’s in your home right now. In fact, a batch of it is very probably within 3 feet of where you are seated. It’s vastly more expensive than gold. And guess what else: You go to a store  routinely and pay for it. Can you guess what it is? By now, you probably can.

P.S. For more examples of shockingly high mark ups you pay on a 9 other common items, be sure to press the “next” link just below this part of the article.

  1. Unbelievable! You kinda gave it away with ‘within three feet of you’ though 🙂

That’s why many years ago I gave up in inkjet printers and got one of those ~$200 laser printers. Yes, more money up front, but the toner cartridges they ship with last for years.

  3. John Wolfram says:

Printer ink. That is why the printers are fairly inexpensive.

  4. Carol says:

Hmmm, I have a b&W laserjet. Is that powder worth more than gold too?

  5. Julia says:

Kevin is right, it’s ink. My husband did the math on it one time. We have an HP inkjet printer, and the ink cartridges that fit in it only have 12 ml of ink. Yet a black ink cartridge usually cost around 20$. It’s ridiculous.

    • Roman says:

Based on Julia’s information, if a 12 ml cartridge costs $20, then a gallon of the stuff would come out to $6,308 (since there are 3,785 ml in a gallon) and not $65,000.

Water? No wonder so many people are in debt. They keep taking showers.

  7. Carol says:

    My Lancome?

  8. Mark Hatchell says:

    Hi Patrick,

It’s a good story but the maths is way out. 3785.411 784 is the amount of ml’s in a US gallon. Divide by 19 mls (the amount each cartridge contains)and you get 199.2321992 cartridges. then times this figure by the cost of each cartridge and you get $3384.955064. $3385 per gallon, bargain !
