Atheists "go postal" over new Mother Teresa stamp

It’s predictable that atheists would work themselves into a froth over this. It’s silly and petty, of course, but it’s also a useful reminder that an increasing number of the God-deniers who walk among us are not content to simply deny the truth and scoff at believers, they are becoming ever more militant and aggressive in their efforts to ramrod their intolerance and narrow-mindedness down everyone else’s throats. Catholics! Stand up to these bullies.

An atheist organization is blasting the U.S. Postal Service for its plan to honor Mother Teresa with a commemorative stamp, saying it violates postal regulations against honoring “individuals whose principal achievements are associated with religious undertakings.”

The Freedom from Religion Foundation is urging its supporters to boycott the stamp — and also to engage in a letter-writing campaign to spread the word about what it calls the “darker side” of Mother Teresa.

The stamp — set to be released on Aug. 26, which would have been Mother Teresa’s 100th birthday — will recognize the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize winner for her humanitarian work, the Postal Service announced last month.

“Noted for her compassion toward the poor and suffering, Mother Teresa, a diminutive Roman Catholic nun and honorary U.S. citizen, served the sick and destitute of India and the world for nearly 50 years,” the Postal Service said in a press release. “Her humility and compassion, as well as her respect for the innate worth and dignity of humankind, inspired people of all ages and backgrounds to work on behalf of the world’s poorest populations.”

But Freedom from Religion Foundation spokeswoman Annie Laurie Gaylor says issuing the stamp runs against Postal Service regulations.

“Mother Teresa is principally known as a religious figure who ran a religious institution. You can’t really separate her being a nun and being a Roman Catholic from everything she did,” Gaylor told FoxNews.com.

Postal Service spokesman Roy Betts expressed surprise at the protest, given the long list of previous honorees with strong religious backgrounds, including Malcolm X, the former chief spokesman for the Nation of Islam, and the Rev. D
r. Martin Luther King Jr., a Baptist minister and co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. . . .

Hell, sue all us atheists. I certainly don't care.

U.S. Government shouldn't be respecting any religion. Doesn't matter if it's Christian, Buddhism, Islam or other.

  2. Anonymous says:

Someone should sue the Freedom from Religion Organization for discrimination since they didn't protest figures from any religion other than Christianity.

  3. Frank says:

I don't remember any groups wanting to boycott any of the Reverend Martin Luther King stamps,
That would have been an interesting battle.

It is true. I checked the USPS website and it is written there as it is quoted on the article. Mother Teresa's humanitarian accomplishments could not be separated from her being a Catholic, that is true. What the USPS should do is strike out that regulation!

Mother Teresa was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Reagan in 1985. If she's eligible for the nation's highest civilian honor in life, she's eligible for a stamp in death.

Let's see. Blanket statements "the God-deniers who walk among us", false statements "ever more militant… to ramrod their intolerance down everyone else's throats". Gee, sounds more like Christians that want to ban gay marriage, condom usage, stem cell research, etc.

    Massive fail.

  7. Sara says:

That's so ridiculous. My Hindu/Indian next door neighbors love Mother Teresa for what she did for their people.

  8. Ismael says:

Haha… these atheists look more and more like religious extremists each day that passes.

    Such irony!

  9. incaelo says:

How incredibly petty and sad. Not sad because of the action itself, but because these people are so blinded and ignorant. I think they deserve our prayer.

I totally appreciate there right to there belief system but did want to share a Mother Teresa quote that I thought explains why she can't just be defined a Christian, but also just an exceptional human being. "People are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered. Love them anyway. If you do good, people may accuse you of selfish motives. Do good anyway. If you are successful, you may win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway. The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Honesty and transparency make you vulnerable. Be honest and transparent anyway. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway. People who really want help may attack you if you help them. Help them anyway. Give the world the best you have and you may get hurt. Give the world your best anyway." – Mother Teresa P.S. I am also confused how in God we trust would be considered religious, it is spiritual. The founders who put that on our money and constitution are the same ones who who advocated the separation between church and state, there is no conflict there, they aren't the same?

  11. Cog says:

The atheists did get one thing correct: "You can't really separate her being a nun and being a Roman Catholic from everything she did." Amen to that!

  12. Linus says:

Madison has been a hot bed of American liberalism, progressivism, socialism, communism for decades and decades, Milwaukee is no better. That whole part of the State is just a cesspool.

  13. Ann says:

Good, more stamps for the rest of us 🙂

  14. Ben says:

Boy am I lucky! I got this "wonderful" organization in my own TOWN! (Madison, WI)
Well, now you know one reason why we Madisonians call it "The People's Republic of Madison".

I'm going to buy as many of the Mother Teresa stamps as I can.

  16. moditters says:

"The Freedom from Religion Foundation is urging its supporters to boycott the stamp."

Well, there are 3 stamps they won't be selling.

  17. Randy says:

Has someone set up an advocacy page to counter-act the silliness from the dark side?
