A view of how bad CCD used to be? Trust me, nothing has changed. The CYM programs across the board are this bad and even worse. And until we get our hands around the catastrophe that is current catechesis, we will continue to lose young Catholics.

This reminds me of what Neal Abraham, Vice President of Academic Affairs at DePauw University, said to a faculty member of the English Dept., Janis Price, as he fired her for providing to her students access to age-old Christian viewpoints on homosexuality: "We will not tolerate the intolerable."

Jenni, so true. My grade 12 english teacher give a very real example of this. She stated that kids are asked to express themselves but they aren't taught *how*. For instance, she asked if anyone in the class could write an interesting story about shoelaces. Not a single hand went up. The she showed us how it could be done. She then asked us to write an interesting story about this desk and everyone was able to. Some of the stories were quite good and could easily be expanded into, say, a Steven King novel, a student drama, a family tradition drama, or a Jerry Lewis film.

That was an amazing Ned Flanders voice too.

    This is a riot.

For my generation it was giggling waiting for a 'ding' to tell Sister to move the film strip ahead one frame.

Children need leadership and they sure as heck need GK Chesterton over, ANY 'facilitator', or hopey-changey from DC, or useless wishy-washy NEA loser. The reality behind this parody is, in fact, child abuse and a sin.

This is said, there is a need for open disscussion and relational ministry, but that often takes the place of true catechesis. The problem is that todays youth (most) are lving in a youth culture that is miles away from the Gospel and are therefor not open to true catechesis, so many bridges must be built in order to bring the the Gospel. It is a mistake to just give the hard core catechesis with out building any relationships with them first. Sadly, most build the relations and then never get around to the hard work of catechiesis.

I love Kevin O'Brien and the Theatre of the Word, Inc., and this has to be one of his funniest presentations. Truly great, but unfortunately it also presents a picture of how bad some CCD programs became during the enlightened era of the 70's and 80's, and I know that there are some places where this type of program still exists.

Great stuff from Dale Alquist and his series "The Apostle of Common Sense" on EWTN. Thanks for sharing, Patrick!

"Orthodoxy — it means ortho-doxy, right teaching — and that's just wrong! There is no right, and in this class there is no teaching."

    That's comic genius. 🙂
